At the end of every of every semester you're going to earn credits in every class that you take. Of course you're going to get a grade in each of those classes,again, A, B, C, D, and F.  Each of those letters are then assigned a corresponding number.  An A is going to be worth 4 Points, a B is going to be worth 3 points, the C is two points, and the D is one point, and the f is 0. And at the end of the semester we're going to convert all of those letters to numbers, add them up, and then divide by the seven.  Someone with all As is going to get you a 4.0 grade point average.  If you have nothing but Cs then you would have a 2.0 grade point average. If you have nothing but Ds you'll have 1.0 grade point average, and, of course, if you've got a mix of that is it's going to be again all of those added up and divided by the seven. Then we will do it again at the end of the year and recalculate your average. Every semester your grade point average is going to change the more grades that you have. The more Ds and Cs you earn, the lower your grade point average is going to be. So if you're earning all Ds for the year or for the semester then you're going to have again that 1.0 grade point average. In order to graduate high school, you've  got to have at least a 2.0 grade point average. If you go all the way through high school and make nothing but Ds you have a 1.0 grade point average.  You passed all your classes, but you do not graduate high school, because you don't have a 2.0 grade point average that is required for graduation. So, it's very very very important that you're maintaining and good grades for each semester to keep that grade point average up over that 2.0 mark needed for graduation.  Hope this helps you understand how keeping your grades up for each semester is very necessary in high school.
