Collection Development Policies

Books and materials that are entered into Marianna High School's collection are given careful consideration.  Budget restraints limit the amount of materials that may be purchased.  Every attempt is made to enter materials that meet the needs of students and teachers and directly support increased literacy.  A collection development policy insures that funds are effectively utilized in the procurement of materials that support the instructional and institutional needs.

Authority
Timeliness of subject matter
Reputation of the author and/or publisher
Presentation of material
Physical characteristics of the material
Special features
Current holdings in the subject area
Circulation of other materials in the same subject area
Cost (projected use)
Usage expectations
Accessibility in online formats

Audiovisual Selection Guidelines

Teachers and staff are encouraged to use www.unitedstreaming.com to meet audiovisual needs.  The collection of audiovisual materials shall be maintained in its current state, but shall not be increased.  All audiovisual curriculum needs may be met through the use of unitedstreaming.com.

Intellectual Freedom

The Marianna High School Media Center supports the American Library Association's Bill of Rights, Intellectual Freedom Principles for Academic Libraries, Freedom to Read Statement and Access to Electronic Information, Services, and Networks: an Interpretation of the LIBRARY BILL OF RIGHTS. The library acquires materials that represent differing opinions without censorship in regard to controversial issues. The library does not add or withdraw, at the request of any individual or group, material which has been chosen or excluded on the basis of stated selection criteria.

An individual or group questioning the appropriateness of material within the collection will be referred to the Library Media Specialist. An individual may register a complaint concerning material that he or she considers objectionable by using the "Request for Reconsideration of Library Resources" form. The Library Media Specialist in conjunction with a committee consisting of four Marianna High School faculty members, and the principal is responsible for reviewing the material in question following current collection development objectives and selection criteria. The Library Media Specialist and committee may consult book reviews, other commentaries, and outside advice. The complainant will receive a reply from the Library Media Specialist indicating the library's position and action planned or taken.
