Reader’s Response

378

“But all’s too weak; for brave Macbeth”

Macbeth is considered the bravest of all men

378

“Till he unseam’d him from the nave t’ th’chops.”

Macbeth killed Macdonwal during the battle which led him to become the Thane of Cawdor.  He is a loyal and trusted soldier for King Duncan

378

“O valiant cousin”

King Duncan and Macbeth are cousins.  The king thinks highly of Macbeth

380

“Go pronounce [The Thane of Cawdor’s] death, and with his former title great Macbeth.”

The King honors Macbeth’s loyalty and the whisper of power becomes a reality.  It seems ironic that the title of a traitor would be bestowed to Macbeth who later becomes the most vial traitor of all—killing the king—This act foreshadows evil.

382

3 witches “Thane of Glamis…thane of cawdor…and king hereafter”

The three witches suggest power--this and the whisper of power becomes a reality.

Classroom policies:

1.      Every person is respected.  Good manners are the basic visible expression of respect.

2.      Our goal is to learn.  We must be awake and alert to generate academic success.  Please sit up, follow directions, and participate.

3.      Education in America is free.  However, the supplies are not.  You must provide your own paper and pencil.  You cannot work without them.  You are expected to bring you notebook and supplies to class everyday.  If you see something our classroom is in need of, be willing to suggest and help out.

4.      If we both speak at once, real communication of ideas is not possible. Therefore, please do not speak while I am speaking, and I will return the same courtesy.

5.      We try to do something valuable every day.  If you are absent, you miss something that is important.  It is your responsibility to find out about material covered and to make up written assignments.  All make-up work is to be completed within three days.  Failure to make up the work will result in a zero.  If you must come into the class to make-up work please arrange a time before or after school.

6.      When you enter the classroom, go to your seat immediately and begin your assignment written on the board.  All warm-up assignments are daily grades and need to be completed.

7.      Tests are my way to discover how much you have learned and how well I have taught you.  Cheating will result in a zero and possibly and parent conference and referral.  If another student has assisted you in cheating, he or she will also receive a zero.

8.      If I have announced the due date of an assignment or test and you were present to hear the due date, then the due date is the day you return to school, not three days later. Please stay current with your assignments and tests.  Make arrangements for make-up work the day you return just to be on the safe side.

9.      If the absence is preplanned or scheduled you must make arrangements to turn in the assignment before the activity unless other arrangements are made previously to the event.

10.  Class time is valuable.  We will begin promptly with a daily assignment written on the board.  Go to your locker between classes because you will not be allowed to go to your locker during class.  Please be in your chair when the bell rings or you may be considered tardy.  Partaking of food and drink is not allowed in class unless provided by the teacher or special arrangements are made ahead of time.  Any food or drink will go in the trashcan.  Please leave these items in your locker or at home.

11.  All work handed in for a grade should be done in blue or black ink (I prefer black). Any other color will not be graded.  Rough drafts may be done in pencil.  Cursive is greatly recommended but neatness and legibility are required.

12.  Grades are a combination of daily work, homework, quizzes, vocabulary, tests, independent reading, and participation.  Everything counts so do your best everyday.  You may check your grades on your computer, the library computer, with the teacher before school, or after school.  You may not check your grades during class.  If there is a problem or mistake, please write a short description about the problem, hand your paper so you can be identified correctly and come and talk to me at the appropriate time.  Your grade is calculated in the following way:

Honors English II and Honors English IV

Homework, daily class assignments, bell ringer.…..……..20%

                        Vocabulary/Projects and Book Reports….………………...…………..20%

                        Reading Tests……………………………………………...30%

                        Writing………………………………………………….....30%

*Semester exams count 20% of overall grade.  Please prepare to be successful.

13.  Proper heading of your paper is required.  Your full name, subject, class period, and the date should be clearly written in the right hand corner.

14.  You will be given outside reading assignments.  There is little daily classroom time given for this assignment so one of your homework assignments is to read daily.  You will have a book report due for each outside novel you contract for.  Also, you will be required to do an oral presentation on the book you select from the required list as well.

15.  Please turn your papers in on time and be prepared.  If no prior arrangements are made the results will be a reduced grade.  (Typically 10 points off per day—however if the assignment is given well in advance then the first day late could be up to 30 points off if turned in late.)

16.  Make-up Days:

Mornings:  7:00-7:50 AM

Afternoons: 3:05-3-45 PM

(If arrangements are made a student may come in any morning or afternoon.  However, make up work is the responsibility of the student and should be made up within the three day grace period of the absence if the student expects to receive full credit.)

Summary:

In Mrs. Hansen’s class successful students:

1.      Come to class prepared

2.      Turn in completed well-done assignments on time and in the appropriate place

3.      Accept Responsibility for make-up work

4.      Refrain from eating in class (dispose of gum properly in the trashcan before class begins)

5.      Listen attentively to the appropriate person and ask well thought out questions

6.      Take pride when completing work and use integrity in all they do
