This is the first course being taught in the new Marianna High School Health Science Career Academy. I am very excited that you will be a part of this new program, Allied Health Assisting. The purpose of this course is to prepare a student for employment as an allied health aide. This course will introduce students interested in a career in the healthcare industry to health science and teach them medical skills at the aide level. The course is being taught by a Registered Nurse. The course will include an overview of many health careers, but will highlight the area of nursing. The content will include, but is not limited to the following:
· Overview of Health Careers & the Healthcare Industry
· Overview of Basic Human Anatomy & Physiology
· Basic Medical Terminology to describe Anatomical Structures, including Prefixes & Suffixes
· Structure & Function of the Body Systems in Health & Disease
· Disease Transmission
· Infection Control Procedures
· Basic Nursing Aide Skills (for example taking vital signs, transporting patients, restorative care, basic first aid, CPR, & assisting patients with personal hygiene).
The goal set for students entering the Health Science Career Academy is to ultimately take and pass the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Exam when they are eligible. Following completion of Health Science 1, Health Science 2, and Allied Health Assisting 3 the student should be adequately prepared to pass the CNA exam. These courses will be taught focusing on this exam with the goal that students in the program will leave high school with a certification that not only will be beneficial for those interested in continuing their education in healthcare, but also for students to go straight into the workforce as skilled workers.
In addition to being prepared for the CNA exam, following completion of Health Science 1, Health Science 2, and Allied Health Assisting 3 the student will complete the vocational program titled Allied Health Assisting. This is a partial requirement for the Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award. This award can pay up to 75% of college tuition & fees at Florida Public Institutions.
