In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to establish the Max Deese Memorial Scholarship Fund at Peoples First Community Bank. The Marianna High School Jazz Ensemble participated in the Florida Band Masters Association Music Performance Assessment for Jazz Bands held at Chipley High School on Saturday, February 27. Our Jazz Ensemble received the highest possible rating of Superior for their performance from all three judges. A fourth judge acted as a clinician and worked with each band after their performance, making suggestions for improvement. We also receive recorded comments from the judges that are used to play for the band members, once back at school, to receive additional feedback on their performance. There were six Jazz Bands from our district that participated in the event. There were also three college bands that played for our enjoyment. The College Jazz Ensembles were: the Chipola Jazz Ensemble directed by Dr. Daniel Powell, the Jazz Ensemble from the Baptist College of Florida in Graceville directed by Ron Branning, and the Jazz Ensemble from Troy University led by Ray Smith.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Congratulations to the participants in the FBA State Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment!
On February 13, at the Florida Bandmasters Association District Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment (MPA), seventeen MHS students qualified to advance to the State Solo and Ensemble MPA, which was held in Ocala on Monday, March 30. Unfortunately, since this was during our Spring Break, only 10 of these students were able to make the drive to Ocala to participate. This is a fantastic achievement by these students, each of whom had made a “Superior / I” rating at District MPA in order to qualify to participate at the State MPA.
At the State level, however, a “Superior / I” rating is not a ‘given’…but any score, even an “Excellent / II” or a “Good / III”, is still a wonderful achievement, since each of these students still worked hard in preparation to perform their solos once again, subjecting themselves to criticisms, complements, comments, and a final rating from yet another judge, who by the very nature of it being a State-level assessment implies a higher, more difficult level of scoring.
The results of Monday’s performances (students listed alphabetically): Samantha Barnes, Flag Twirling Solo— Good / III Travis Bontrager, Alto Saxophone Solo— Superior / I Andrew Davis, Trumpet Solo— Excellent / II Virginia McDaniel, Flute Solo— Superior / I Ashley Norville, Alto Saxophone Solo— Excellent / II Mary Ann Osiecka, Clarinet Solo— Excellent / II Ashley Raines, Flag Twirling Solo— Good / III Lindsey Starling, Clarinet Solo— Excellent / II Bryan Whitfield, Trumpet Solo— Good / III Anthony Wood, Alto Saxophone Solo— Excellent / II
All of these students are to be commended for their extraordinary efforts to have themselves “put under the microscope” and be judged yet again. CONGRATULATIONS for their participation in this State level assessment!
Congratulations to the SUPERIOR MHS Symphonic Band! Friday night, March 13, 2009, the MHS Symphonic Band performed at the Florida Bandmasters Association Music Performance Assessment, held at Chipley High School. The band earned an overall "Superior" rating from the three judges in the 'prepared' concert venue, and also earned a "Superior" rating from the Sight-Reading judge.
******************************* Friday, February 27, 2009: WHAT A GREAT PRE-FESTIVAL MINI-CLINIC! Our guest clinicians were very impressed with the attitude of our band students, and were collectively able to make some marked improvements with the various sections of the band! THANKS go to our Band Boosters for supporting this wonderful opportunity for our students to get ideas and suggestions from other experienced band directors and musicians!

The 56 students appeared in 24 separate presentations (solos, small ensembles, and large ensembles), with some students performing 2 or 3 times. Each soloist, small ensemble, or large group performed in front of 1-3 judges, who provided comments and suggestions, and gave each person or group an overall score.

At Marianna High School, after-school sectional rehearsals are scheduled throughout the year, to promote maximum musical and instructional development by combining like instruments from the various band classes. In addition, distinguished clinicians are invited to come work with the band students, in order to broaden their exposure to diverse musical and educational ideas, which will help them to become more well-rounded musicians.
On the "Ensembles" page, you will find information on after-school rehearsals.
Click on the "Information" link for a copy of the new Band Handbook, which was given out during Band Camp, as well as a copy of the yearly band schedule.
